This extremely rare 19th-century French musical fob is an extraordinary survival from the world of antique novelty jewellery and miniature mechanical objects. Made in 18kt gold and centred on a polished hardstone base, it combines the decorative appeal of a fine gold fob with a concealed musical mechanism, making it an especially unusual and fascinating object for the serious collector.

The mechanism is ingeniously hidden within the fob. By gently twisting the bail at the top, the concealed wind-up mechanism is activated and plays a musical tune. Objects of this type were made as intimate personal accessories and curiosities, combining fine craftsmanship with mechanical ingenuity. Examples incorporating a functioning musical movement into such a small gold fob are exceptionally uncommon.

Design & Details

The fob is crafted in 18kt gold, with a total weight of approximately 20 grams, and terminates in a substantial hardstone base measuring approximately 2 × 1.5cm. The entire fob stands approximately 3cm tall, giving it an impressive presence despite its miniature scale.

The most remarkable feature is, of course, the hidden wind-up musical movement.
