Cannetille

Cannetille is a highly decorative form of goldwork using fine wires, twisted elements and small granulated details to create elaborate raised patterns.

The technique was particularly fashionable during the Georgian and early Victorian periods and was used to create intricate floral, scroll and geometric decoration. The fine gold elements could be arranged into elaborate three-dimensional forms, giving cannnetille jewellery a delicate and highly textured appearance.

Cannetille is especially valued for the skill and precision required to produce such fine decorative work. Surviving examples can show remarkable detail and are an important feature of Georgian and early nineteenth-century jewellery.
