Emerald Cut

Emerald Cut is a rectangular or square step cut characterised by a large, open table and a series of long, parallel facets arranged in a stepped pattern. Although the cut takes its name from its traditional use for emeralds, it is also widely used for diamonds and other gemstones.

The step-cut design creates a distinctive appearance that is different from brilliant-cut diamonds. Rather than producing numerous small flashes of light, an emerald cut tends to display broader flashes and reflections across its large, open facets. This can give a diamond an elegant, sophisticated and understated appearance.

Emerald cuts are usually rectangular with truncated corners, although square variations are sometimes described as square emerald cuts. The cut’s large table makes the clarity and quality of the gemstone particularly visible, so stones with good clarity are often desirable.

The style became especially popular during the Art Deco period, when its clean lines and geometric appearance complemented the architectural designs of the era. Emerald-cut diamonds can be found in Art Deco rings, earrings and other jewellery, as well as in later twentieth-century and contemporary jewellery.

Emerald Cut should not be confused with Cushion Cut or Brilliant Cut. A cushion cut has rounded corners and generally uses brilliant-style faceting, while an emerald cut has straight sides, truncated corners and stepped facets. Brilliant cuts are designed primarily to maximise scintillation and brilliance, whereas an emerald cut emphasises broad reflections and the clarity and character of the stone.
