Regard

Regard Ring is a type of sentimental ring in which gemstones are arranged so that their initial letters spell the word REGARD. The gemstones traditionally used are Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby and Diamond.

Regard rings are a form of acrostic jewellery, in which gemstones communicate a hidden word or message through their initial letters. The word “regard” expressed affection, esteem or romantic feeling and made these rings particularly suitable as personal gifts.

The fashion for acrostic jewellery became especially popular during the nineteenth century, particularly in the Victorian period, although examples and related traditions existed earlier.

Regard rings could feature different gemstones, settings and designs, but the defining characteristic is the intended spelling of REGARD. The stones were often arranged in a row or cluster so that the message could be interpreted by someone familiar with the symbolism.

At Weldons, regard rings are particularly interesting examples of Victorian sentimental jewellery because the gemstones themselves carry the hidden message.
