Suffragette Jewellery

Suffragette jewellery refers to jewellery associated with the women’s suffrage movement, particularly pieces incorporating the movement’s distinctive colours of purple, white and green.

The colours were adopted by the British Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), with purple representing dignity, white representing purity and green representing hope. These colours could be expressed through gemstones, enamel or other decorative materials.

Amethyst was commonly used to represent purple, while diamonds or pearls could provide white and green gemstones such as peridot could complete the colour combination.

Suffragette jewellery is particularly associated with the early twentieth century and can be found in rings, brooches, pendants and other forms of jewellery. The term is also sometimes used more broadly today for jewellery inspired by the colours and symbolism of the women’s suffrage movement.
