Chasing

Chasing is a decorative metalworking technique in which the surface of a metal object is worked from the front using specialised tools.

The technique can create recessed lines, textures and detailed patterns, often used alongside repoussé to produce richly decorated jewellery and metalwork.

While repoussé raises the metal from the reverse, chasing is used from the front to refine, define and sharpen the design. The two techniques are therefore often used together to create detailed relief decoration.

Chasing can be found in jewellery and metalwork from many historical periods and was used in both gold and silver.
