Calibré Cut

Calibré cut refers to a gemstone-cutting technique in which stones are specially shaped and cut to fit closely together within a particular jewellery setting.

Unlike standard gemstone shapes, calibré-cut stones are individually cut to precise dimensions so that they form a closely fitted row or pattern. When set together, the individual stones can create an almost continuous surface of colour with very little metal visible between them.

Calibré-cut sapphires, emeralds and rubies were particularly popular in Art Deco jewellery, where they were used to create strong geometric bands of colour around diamonds and within platinum designs.

The technique requires considerable precision because the stones must fit closely together within the setting. It allowed jewellers to incorporate vivid blocks of colour while maintaining the clean, geometric appearance characteristic of Art Deco jewellery.
